LONGVIEW FALLS TO EAGLES
SAN ANTONIO - Wind advantage helped the visitors off to a good start, and sending Don Barton scooting 85 yards for an apparent touchdown on a punt return in the second period. Barton's long scamper, however, was nullified by a clipping penalty well inside Longview territory, and after that bad break the Lobo offense collasped completely.

On the other hand, the Fore-handmen, were on the attack from start to finish. A pass interception stopped on drive in the second quarter after it had carried to the Longview 13. Another smash, good for 60 yards carried to the Lobo 1-yard line before the Longview defense braced and chcked it. Another scoring attempted was ended on the 6 when Calhoun fumbled in the fourth quarter and in the same period the Eagles crushed to the 19, only to be halted again by the hard-tackling East Texas champs.

Calhoun, running with crushing power, was the rushing leader for the Eagles with 76 yards, 3 more than gained by the versatitle Sweet. Anderson gained 56, 49 of it coming on his touchdown jaunt in the second period and Schleauning managed for 30, although it was obvious early that the Lobos had set their defense for the little guy.

Big Jim Pakenham, who did a great job in helping Menasco on the line-backing, was Longview's biggest noise, poicking up 47 yards, but he needed 11 carries to do it.

That Longview didn't gain more was a credit to teh vicious Brackenridge line and some determined linebacking by the Eagles' aces in that department, Calhoun and Perkins. But it would be impossible to single out individual stars, because the Eagles were a team all the way, and one that wasn't to be beaten.

Brackenridge broke a threatened first-half scoreless deadlock with a dramatic suddenness with 6 minutes and 40 seconds of play remaining in the second period. The ball was resting between the midstripe and the Longview 49 at the time, Calhoun having deposited it there with a one-yard burst through the middle after Sweet, running wide from the quaterback slot, had circled right end for 15 and a first down from the Brackenridge 35. That was where Sweet had been smackded down hard on attempt to run back Jimmy Nelson's low punt.

The Eagles scoring thrust started slowly, Calhoun taking the ball on a snapback from Perkins and starting into a spinner. Half-way around he tucked the ball into Anderson's hands and the speedy wingback immediately cut through a small hole over his own left tackle. He got little blocking on his trip through the secondary but his fast pace carried him safely by Menasco, who barely got his hands on the ballcarrier, and that speed put him over the goal after a footrace with Jack Serpasa that he won easily.

With Sweet holding, Schleuning botted a perfect placekick forthe extra point that gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Five minutes later the Brackenridge advantage appeared to have disappeared when Barton tucked in Sweet's long boot on his own 15-yard line and staying on his feet despite two jarring tackles by the Eagles, ran all the way for a touchdown, 85 yards away. But even before he neared the goal in a foot race with Lester hoffman, Sisco was standing back on the Longview 34, signaling a rules infraction at that point. Co-captain Perkins, as expected, took the penalty instead of the gain and the Lobos were penalized back to their 19. The first half ended three plays later with Longview stmied on its 16.

Until Anderson's 49-yard trip to Touchdownland, the two teams had battled on even terms, each scoring one penetration and with Brackenridge holding a slim advantage in first down, 5 to 4.

Taking advantage of a stiff north wing at their backs, the Lobos kept the Eagles pinned in their own back yard during the first quarter and once, starting from their 44, got all the way to the Eagle 18 before they were halted. Barton and Pakenham did the damage for the East Texans but after Cashell crashed over for the penetration to the 19, Brackenridge threw on the brakes. Cashell lost 3, a pass fell incomplete and the Eagles took over on their 22.

Shortly after, the Eagles picked up speed with the wind at their backs and crushed from their 35 all the way to the Longview 13 before they were stopped. Schleuning got 8, Calhoun bulled for 13 and, after two line plays had netted 5, Calhoun passed to Ray Luce wide open on the east sideline for a first down on the 14. Calhoun added 1 but a pass was incomplete and Calhoun lost 6 when a pitchout from Sweet on a spread went wild, and on the next play Menasco intercepted big Dick's fling on his 4 and ran it back to the Longview 20.

The second Eagle touchdown also was startling from the Longview viewpoint. Longview was only a yard short of mid-field, with the wind at its back and the Lobos were trying to get an attack moving when Perkins made his scoring ramble. Barton took a handoff from Cashell and dropped back for a pass that landed smack-dab in the Brackenridge center's arms on the Lobo 45. Only Barton, the boy who threw the pass, had a chance to get close to the speeding Perkin and he lost the race. The Longview defender smacked Perkins hard as he crossed the goal but it came too late to prevent the score. Again Schleuning converted from placement to make it 14-0.

By then the San Antonians were red-hot and, after forcing a Longview kick, smashed from their 39 to the Longview 1 before they were forced to yield the ball. Sweet led that drive with a 21-yard carry around right end to the Lobo 34 that gave the fans a glimpse of some of the prettiest downfield blcoking seen all season. Schleuning, Sweet, Anderson, and Calhoun then carried in short bursts for a first on the 9, but the Lobos stopped Calhoun's fourth-down a yard short of the goal.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles knocked at the door again but were turned back on the 6 when Calhoun fumbled. An intercepted pass by Longview and a fumble second later gave Brackenridge possession on the Lobo 36 and again it was the same versatile backfield foursome that led the drive. Sweet igniting the spark with a 12-yard carry. On the last try, Calhoun drove 7 yards but fumbled, Muston recovering fro the visitors.

Cashell's fumble set up the third Eagle tally, Shaw recovering for the Eagles on the Longview 18. Jack Emmert ran for 13 but the Eagles were penalized 5 to the 23, from where Calhoun pegged a perfect shot to little Ecrette, who took the ball on the run on the 4, evaded one Lobo and stepped over for the touchdown. Emmert had two trials at the coversion but both were wide.
