LOBOS ROLL PAST BRONCOS
LONGVIEW - Coach Walter Parker's Denton High Broncos returned from Longview with one thought in mind...improvement.

All the inexperienced but spirited Broncos probably realized their shortcomings Friday night as Coach Marco Stewart's powerful Longview Lobos rumbled through their forces, 41-0.

An estimated 6,000 fans were on hand as the lopsided season-openered was unreeled in crisp fall weather.

Veteran end Bobby Joe Olman expressed the general overall feelings of the Broncos as they were boarding the bus for the return trip.

He said, "That game is over now, and I'm ready to really get prepared for Grahma next Friday."

Sonny Jones sparked the Pack to their initial victory scoring two touchdowns, kicking four extra points and doing an excellect part as the Wolves' field general.

The Lobos began their heavy scoring parade from the very start. They returned Olman's opening kickoff to their own 32-yard line and continued to romp as Jones maneuvered a series of first downs to the Bronco 12-yard line, and then carried over for the first score on a quarterback sneak.

Jones, the Lobos all-state candidate, proved to his home folks that the Lobos transition from a single wing to a T formation has not found him wanting.

He was everything Longview fans had touted him - constantly digging deeper into Bronco territory, passing under difficult circumstances, and doing a magnificent job of quarterbacking.

Veteran Bronco halfback Kenneth Owens was responsible for Denton's only real scoring threat late in the fourth period. He intercepted a Lobo pass on his own 33-yard line and headed a series of first downs that brought the Broncos within seven years of the Longview goal.

However, a Bronco fumble and a blocked pass behind the scrimmage found the Lobos back in possession on their own 33.

After the interception, Owens carried for two over center and then around left end to midfield for a first down. He then picked up four yards over right guard, and Dan Boren brought it to the enemy 44, where he was shoved out of bounds.

Quarterback Bill Walker went through the middle of the Longview line to the nine and another first down. He was follwed by Boren through the same route to the 37.

Here Owens took charge, again, skirting left end to the 27, and two plays later to the Lobo seven before end Jim McRae blocked Homer Pennington's pass and recovered back on the 3.

Walker and Pennington, both doing a fine job in their first appearances as the Bronco's top quarterbacks, divided time at the man-under slot, and Bill Tilley, 172-pound Bronco center, dealt the Lobos his share of trouble when on defense.

Time after time, he was the "center" of altraction when the Lobos tried the middle of the line with no success. Howeve he was badly shaken up in a scramble to recover a fubmel late in teh fourth stanze and was forced to leave the game.
