LOBOS SLAY MAVERICKS
LONGVIEW - Say this for Marshall. It tried. It fired all its shells. Gunpower just ran out.

Longview simpled proved too much for a Maverick football team here Friday night in Lobo Stadium in the District 14-AAAA opener for both clubs.

Just for the record, the Lobos posted a 27 to 0 victory. It was the fourth win of the 1970 season for Coach Tom Hudspeth's Lobos and it was also their ninth straight - dating back to mid 1969.

Longview's No. 1 defensive unit held the Mavericks to zero first downs in the first half and only 13 yards rushing. Longview compiled 21 points on the socreboard, 11 first downs, 152 yards rushing and 52 through the air. the Mavericks of Coach Ralph Brooks were really outclassed here by a Lobo football team.

The Marshall ball club never made it to mid-field in the first half. The closest they came was to the 29 yard line in the second quarter. Marshall only ran 17 offensive plays during the first half. The largest gained was a nine yard run by tailback Graylon Smith.

Fullback Rodney Cox in the first half led by the rush with 14 carries for 73 yards. Tailback James Lomax carried 123 times for 53 yards. Quarterback Ronnie Davie completed four of five passes for 59 yards.

Marshall went home with a 2-2-0 record. The Lobos are now 4-0-0 for the season and will play John Tyler's Lions here on Friday Night, Oct. 9 in a 7:30 PM game.

The Lobo defensive line must again be given a big round of thanks for a fine job. Big names in this group would have to be Keith Judy, Bill Williams, Kent Wilson, Don Peeek, Matt Dove, Jimmy Draper, and others.

The offensive line of Kenneth Howell, Dana Walter, Ted Martin, Mike Craig, Mancil Harvery, Geraid Thornton, Bill Gibson, and Randy Peteres turned in a good job.

Again it was truely a team victory. Sure there were individual stars. But it took teamwork to beat a Marshall club of Coach Ralph Brooks.
