The redemption was resounding in Longview's 41-7 rout of Marshall before a sellout crowd of 9,000 spectators. The win is the seventh consecutive in the series for Longview (1-1), while Marshall (0-2) drops to 0-2 for the first time since 2002.

Longview's redemption came after failing to get a first down in the second half in last week's 16-13 loss at Lufkin. Longview's running game led the revival with 280 yards and five touchdowns rushing. The attack was led by Johnny Garrett, who had 138 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns, including fourth-quarter touchdown runs of 44 and 13 to finish off the Mavericks.

"It was good blocking by our offensive line and Johnny following the blocks," Longview coach John King said. "The line did a good job making holes and Johnny was able to run under Marshall's pads."

Marshall has allowed 104 points in its first two games of the 2007 season, allowing points in every quarter.

Marshall did have success moving the ball outside the red zone. Marshall had more first downs in the game, 23-19, and the Mavericks had 380 total yards of offense, not far off Longview's total of 409.

But on three second-half drives, the Mavericks came away with no points.

Longview took command with 2:44 left in the third quarter on a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown by Dacorris Ford, who also had 2 1/2 tackles for losses. Drew Harden and Dontray Nelson also had interceptions for Longview.

Longview had its most success in the first half with quick drives. Longview needed 2 minutes and 46 seconds to go 75 yards on its opening drive, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Mark Johnson.

Longview needed just 1:09 and four plays to go 84 yards and score its second touchdown, a 24-yard scamper up the middle by Johnson. Johnson accounted for 93 yards of offense in the first half and 106 total yards in for the game.

Marshall struck back with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Hood to Dameon Smith on the first play of the second quarter to cut Longview's lead to 14-7. Longview countered with another fast drive, going 80 yards in 2:44, including a 45-yard pass from Damion Lewis to Travrus Brown. The drive ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Garrett, who had 60 yards rushing on six carries in the first half.

Marshall then took control of the game's tempo, only to have it end in heartbreaking fashion. The Mavericks crawled 89 yards in 22 plays on its last drive of the first half, burning 8:44 in time. With four seconds left in the half however, Hood fumbled a snap at the Longview 1-yard line and the Lobos recovered to preserve a 21-7 halftime lead.

Longview had nine tackles for losses. Andrew Clough led Marshall with 98 yards rushing.

Both Longview and Marshall have next week off before resuming play. Longview hosts nationally-ranked River Ridge (La.) John Curtis on Sept. 22. Marshall plays at Monroe (La.) Neville on Sept. 21.
