LGV VS MAR VOTED TOP IN STATE
By Shane Stark - Longview versus Marshall, which has been played 97 times, has been voted the state's top rivalry by Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

The poll was released on the magazine's Web site Thursday.

Texas Football writer Travis Stewart wrote that "no matter which way you slice the bread, the rivalry between Longview and Marshall perfectly typifies Texas football."

Stewart further wrote: "It's way out in East Texas, where the heat feels hotter than hot, where the football stands would be full on Fridays if the varsity was scrimmaging the robotics club and where the curious come from far and wide to see some of the best players and teams in the whole state."

Stewart noted that Longview's drop to Class 4A factored into the decision. The schools will be back in the same district starting next fall.

Longview leads the series 51-41-5, and has won seven straight.

The rest of the list: No. 2 Odessa Permian vs. Midland Lee; No. 3, Nederland vs. Port Neches-Groves; No. 4, Denison vs. Sherman; No. 5, Texas High vs. Arkansas High; No. 6, Donna vs. Weslaco; No. 7, Gordon vs. Strawn; No. 8, New Braunfels vs. Seguin; No. 9, Lufkin vs. Nacogdoches; and No. 10, Dallas Kimball vs. Dallas Carter.

Last summer, Longview and Marshall gained national press when Maxim Magazine selected their game No. 14 among the "15 Nastiest Rivalries In Sports."

Derek Jeter vs. A-Rod finished one spot ahead.
